In 1967, I was playing in Baltimore with a rehearsal big band that tested scores for Don Ellis. One of the pieces was an 11/8, written as 4+4+3. It was fun, but I immediately realized that a 3+3+3+2 groove would kick some serious butt. So I wrote this, and called it Ye Olde Eleven. (The original Ocean's Eleven was still fairly fresh, and I could hear Sammy Davis singing E-O-Eleven..)
When I moved to San Francisco the next year, during the Summer of Love, I changed the name to Wham, Bam - Excuse Me, Sir!.
Eventually I began playing it on B3, and it took on its current title.
