Featuring Ndugu Chancler, Jerry Goodman and Brandon Fields,
Several of my more challenging compositions get a working over
(They also do some other folks' tunes...)
Tangishaka is a Burundi word meaning "God gives what he wishes." The meter is 7/4, with the solos doubling that into a 7/8 montuno.
Transplacement is probably the most complex rhythmically of these tunes, being in multiple compound times: 22/8, 8½/4 and 5/4. It has been recorded several times, mostly with the Zytron ensemble.
Reminiscense begins and ends with a rubato, freely evolving melodic phrase set. In the middle is a Hindustani-like melody in slow 15/4. This is actually quite easy to play, and the chart will be available on the Scores page soon.
Finnegans Sleep is, of course, a reference to James Joyce's Finnegans Wake. It is mistakenly called Finnegan's Dream on the Vasco albums, and is offered here in two forms.
The second version is my original sequence from 1993, not the Prophetz.
