This is studio number five that I have built or prepped. The first was a former chinchilla ranch in Topanga Canyon, Los Angeles. The building was completely built of concrete bloc and rebar, and the door between the control room and studio was solid concrete and weighed over a ton. The hinges had literally melted from the weight, so the door dragged on the floor. Inside was very quiet, but reflective..
The next studio was very small, but heavily soundproofed and isolated. A 9 x 30 foot garage that I partitioned off into studio and control room. The recorder was a 1-inch 8-track 3M Model 56, with an unusual tape transport design. I had shot my wad on the tape deck, and had little left for the board, so it was a hand-built monstrosity that actually sounded great when it worked, but rarely worked.
My third try was simply half of the living room of a really small house, with a Tascam Model 38 recorder. It doesn't really qualify as a "studio" except that I recorded and produced much of my second electronic album there.
Number four was in a 20 x 8-foot trailer outside the house; we used the living room as recording space for live musicians, while the synths were quite happy in the cramped space.
