Old man walkin' down the railroad track,
in his hand he carrying a big ole sack.
I asked him. "What you got there?" and he answered, "It's a Bag of Blues"
"All my cares and troubles, and a bit of change from payin' my dues."

He opened up the sack and then he reached inside,
pulled out a piece of tombstone and a rope he'd tied.
"That there's my momma, and this one's my old dog Blue. along with
all my cares and troubles..."

<Bridge>
The tax man's in here somewhere, my dealer's there as well,
Every drink I ever had, the made my life pure hell.

He held out a bit of fluff and said, "That's my ex wife,"
the stranger she ran off with is my friend for life,
but I still miss her sometimes so I keep her in my Bag of Blues,
with all my cares and troubles...

<Solos till Bridge>

Sometimes this sack gets heavy, filled with the troubles I see.
But as long as those woes are in that bag, they're not inside of me!

He closed it tight and smiled and set it on his knees
He said, "You really ought to get you one of these, just
head to Walmart, and ask 'em for a Bag of Blues, for
all your cares and troubles and a bit of change from payin' your dues."
